New mandate, new powers: Europe's strengthened regional assembly to kick off
04.02.2010 - Europe's regional and local representatives will assert their strengthened position under the new Lisbon treaty rules at the constituent plenary session of the Committee of the Regions' 2010-2015 mandate. 344 regional presidents, parliamentarians, mayors and county councillors from across Europe will meet in Brussels from 9-10 February to elect their new leadership, debate the political priorities of regions and local authorities in Europe for the next five years, and in particular the future of regional policy with Manuel Chaves González, Third Vice-President of the Spanish Government. The assembly will also continue its work in the legislative process and adopt several key reports.

Major cities join forces to make the Euro-Mediterranean partnership a success story
21.01.2010 - At the inaugural session of the Euro-Mediterranean Regional and Local Assembly (ARLEM) in Barcelona today, mayors of major cities from the European Union and the Mediterranean partner countries have joined forces to energise the Euro-Mediterranean partnership. The mayors are determined to go beyond existing traditional diplomatic relations by launching concrete cooperation programmes on issues such as immigration, climate change, urban development or cultural exchange. Closeness to citizens, efficiency in project management and tackling real life issues will be at the heart of this cooperation, which should underpin the institutional framework of the Euro-Mediterranean Union.

The Euro-Mediterranean Assembly of Local and Regional Authorities (ARLEM) seeks tangible action
21.01.2010 - As the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) nears the end of negotiations on its structure and work programme, local and regional representatives have not let the grass grow under their feet. Over seventy local and regional representatives from thirty countries around the three shores of the Mediterranean met in Barcelona today, Thursday 21 January, for the inaugural meeting of the Euro-Mediterranean Assembly of Local and Regional Authorities (ARLEM). They called on EU Commissioner, Paweł Samecki, and Spanish State Secretary, Ángel Lossada Torres-Quevedo, to ensure an "inclusive process" and to give "priority to tangible action".
