2010: European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion

Poverty in Europe affects nearly 84 million people whose existence is precarious and who are lacking in what most people take for granted.

Poverty gives rise to all sorts of problems: a lack of food, clothes, accommodation and heating.

Poverty limits people's options in life, which can lead to social exclusion.

Underlying the European Year for combating poverty and social exclusion is a fundamental principle of solidarity. Its objectives are to boost public awareness of the problem and generate political commitment from the European Union and its Member States to counter it.

Its aim is also to give victims of poverty and social exclusion the possibility to voice their concerns, providing them with ways to climb out of poverty.

Lastly, this European Year is designed to break down stereotypes and prejudices connected to poverty.  By embracing the European principles of solidarity and partnership, the 2010 European Year is sending out a strong signal: we must attack the causes of poverty head-on so as to ensure that everyone can play an active role in society.
