Unless we measure the state of our regions and cities, we cannot understand the state of our Union. Only by taking the pulse of our communities, we can decide how effective the EU has been on the ground, and what the EU needs to do to help its people.

Understanding Europe from the local perspective

The #EURegionalBarometer speech draws on the EU Annual Regional and Local Barometer, a report by the European Committee of the Regions based on original studies as well as academic research and contributions from other public sources.

The Barometer provides a snapshot of the most pressing challenges faced by regions and cities across the Union and helps to inform EU policy choices. It also provides a steer for the European Committee of the Regions as it pursues its political priorities for 2020-25: to bring Europe closer to people, to build resilient communities, and to promote cohesion – placed-based policies – as a fundamental value of the EU.

In 2020, the Barometer provided a comprehensive analysis of the impact of the COVID-19 across Europe and assessed the front-line role played by local and regional authorities in efforts to tackle the health and economic crisis.

A year and a half into the pandemic, regions and cities are now focusing on ensuring a just and rapid economic and social recovery. The 2021 #EURegionalBarometer provides an updated overview of a wide range of issues that will determine the success of recovery efforts in our regions and cities: from health to migration, from the Green Deal to the digital transformation, and from economic and social cohesion to strengthening European democracy.

Survey: Local politicians on the future of Europe

The EU Regional and Local Barometer this year includes the first-ever poll of local and regional politicians from each of the EU's 27 Member States. The local politicians of the EU and the future of Europe survey, conducted by IPSOS, will provide information necessary to rethink European governance more inclusively and democratically.
