Fit for Future opinion on End-of-life vehicles and 3R-type approval

The Fit for Future Platform (F4F) opinion on the revision of Directive 2000/53/EU on end-of-life vehicles and Directive 2005/64/EC on “3R type-approval", drafted by CoR representative in the Platform, Dr. Mark Speich (EPP/DE), has been adopted by unanimity during the Platform's plenary meeting on 5 December 2022 in Brussels. You can find the approved opinion here.

The opinion, which benefitted from an in-depth RegHub consultation on the implementation of the two Directives, sets out 7 suggestions on how to improve the existing law in a future revision. In short, the opinion promotes a more circular approach by linking design issues to end-of-life treatment, considering rules on mandatory recycled content for certain materials of components and improving recycling efficiency. It further aims to improve the operational feasibility and implementation of the Directives, and optimize administrative burden through a better use of digital solutions and coherence with other sectoral policies and legislation, based on a life-cycle approach.

The opinion comes just in time to feed into the European Commission's revision of the two Directives, scheduled for Q2/2023.
