Karl-Heinz Lambertz foi eleito presidente do Comité das Regiões Europeu (CR) em julho de 2017, após ter cumprido um mandato de dois anos e meio como primeiro vice-presidente. É também presidente do Parlamento da Comunidade Germanófona da Bélgica.

Nascido a 4 de junho de 1952, em Schoppen, o interesse de Karl-Heinz Lambertz pela política surgiu no início da sua carreira, tendo sido presidente do Conselho da Juventude germanófona (1975-1980). Após uma série de funções ligadas à sua formação académica em Direito, tornou-se deputado ao Parlamento da Comunidade Germanófona, em 1981.

De 1990 a 1999, desempenhou várias funções ministeriais no Governo da Comunidade Germanófona, antes de ser eleito seu ministro-presidente (1999-2014). Em 2014, tornou-se presidente do Parlamento pela primeira vez, lugar que ocupou até 2016, altura em que foi nomeado representante da Comunidade Germanófona no Senado belga. Em junho de 2019, regressou ao cargo de presidente do Parlamento, lugar que ainda ocupa.

Karl-Heinz Lambertz é membro do CR desde 2001, tendo sido presidente do Grupo do PSE no CR (2011-2015). Desde 2000, é membro do Congresso dos Poderes Locais e Regionais da Europa, do qual é neste momento vice-presidente.
