Conference for Mayors “Translating the EU Green Deal into local action", as part of the Belgian EU Presidency.

  • Time and date: 15/03/2024 09.00-17.30
  • Location: The European Parliament and the European Committee of the Regions

The Government of Flanders will gather 550 mayors and representatives of local governments to the conference “Translating the EU green deal to local action", in Brussels on 15 March 2024, within the framework of the Belgian EU Presidency

Local and regional authorities are in the driver's seat to put the Green Deal into practice. Their mobilisation capacity should be embedded in the heart of the EU Green Deal initiatives to facilitate the best possible participation of our citizens, businesses and local community organisations.

The Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU wants to explore how to generate a greater impact by building a bridge between these, better serving the needs of all local and regional governments, creating stronger synergies, and integrating with regional supportive frameworks across the Union to make the Green Deal thrive in our communities.

In 2024, on behalf of the Belgian presidency of the Council of the European Union, the government of the Flanders region of Belgium is inviting 550 mayors symbolically 'Fit for 55' to highlight the way forward for the EU Green Deal's supportive initiatives for local and regional authorities.

The means of implementing solutions to achieve the Green Deal's ambitions are countless, but what they all have in common is that they do take shape locally, in our regions and cities. It is high time these local and regional governments were brought together. It is time to learn how other regions and cities are making a difference through an unprecedented mobilisation of all local partners. By analysing and scaling up mutually-reinforcing partnerships between local governments, regions and European initiatives, and by matching ambitions to regulations and investment plans.

The conference aims to highlight the way forward for the implementation of the EU Green Deal. What we need is a new multilevel governance framework, with bridges between the EU initiatives and more direct funding solutions. Be inspired during the conference by best practices across Europe and share your own. Experience in-depth sessions with experts from the local to the European level. Share a glass with other local leaders while building strong connections for the future.
