This project demonstrates that the type of actions undertaken by a public administration can set an example to its fellow citizens. Moreover, by cooperating with the private sector, it shows that together we can improve the place where we live.

Since being voted into office in 2017, the municipal administration has set out to make Balestrate a green town, following up on the provisions of the Sustainable Energy Action Plan (SEAP) which had already been approved some years previously. More specifically, it has focused on issues relating to the energy efficiency of public buildings, sustainable mobility, exploiting natural resources in the local area, reducing waste production, improving the quality of waste recycled and of course increasing the percentage of waste collected separately. In recent months, work has begun on drafting a Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plan (SECAP).

In the space of three years, we have made all the public buildings in our local area more efficient, ensuring savings for the municipality and setting a good example to many private individuals who have invested in renewable energy. We have encouraged the use of alternatives to cars to reduce traffic, both through public initiatives (bike-sharing, removing architectural barriers, expanding the restricted traffic zones, providing electric vehicles for use by municipal employees) as well as in partnership with the private sector (tourist train). We have managed to increase the proportion of waste collected separately so that it is now consistently over 70%, introducing separate collections of PET plastics and cans, home composting and various awareness-raising activities.
