The CoR has recently commissioned a study on AI and GenAI adoption by local and regional administrations that followed up on the results of previous studies (made mainly by the European Commission) and delves deeper into the opportunities and challenges subnational authorities have with the AI and GenAI adoption and the impact this has on the quality of their interactions with citizens, as well as the efficiency of internal and cross-administration processes.

It further makes concrete recommendations on how AI and GenAI could contribute to bridging digital divides across different types of territories and/or groups of citizens and examines the role of political leaders in promoting AI and GenAI and the need for cooperation between the technical and political levels.

This lunch-time briefing will offer the opportunity to get acquainted with the main findings of the study, compare its results with the current research on AI in public administration and make reference to the recently adopted CoR opinion of rapporteur Alberto Cirio (IT/EPP) on "Challenges and opportunities of artificial intelligence in the public sector: defining the role of regional and local authorities".

The event is in the format of a hybrid lunch-time briefing, which will take place on Tuesday 2January 2025, from 13h00 to 14h00, in room JDE 53 of the European Committee of the Regions and online (via TEAMS).
