On 7 May 2026, the CoR and the Cities of Remembrance international network will co‑organise a high‑level event in Brussels dedicated to the role of European cities in defending democracy and European unity.

Building on the Dunkirk Appeal of May 2025, the event will mark the formal adoption of “The Brussels Pledge”, a political commitment by European mayors and local leaders to actively uphold Europe’s founding values in a context of increasing geopolitical tensions, democratic pressure and security challenges. Cities are often the first level of governance to experience the impact of these crises and are therefore key frontline actors in democratic resilience, solidarity and peace.

The event will bring together local and regional elected representatives, European institutions, local government organisations, civil society actors and youth, and aims to strengthen cooperation among pro‑European cities committed to safeguarding democracy, peace and the rule of law across Europe.

The discussion will highlight the responsibility of cities as both witnesses of history and actors of the present, drawing lessons from twentieth‑century tragedies to address current risks. Particular emphasis will be placed on the central role of young people, promoting their engagement through remembrance, dialogue, education and transnational exchanges as a means to foster critical awareness of European values rooted in the post‑war experience.
