Most of the school buildings were not originally built to accommodate the current demands for hydrothermal performance and quality indoor setting. The need to reconstruct the buildings of the school network to include these requirements, has been a priority in Sintra.
The "Sintra School Park Requalification Programme" was started in 2018 with the objective of rebuilding 98 school buildings that are part of Sintra's public school network, aiming to act in an integrated manner at four levels:
1) requalification of physical infrastructures;
2) opening the school to the community;
3) maintenance and management of buildings after renovation;
4) reduction of environmental impact.
Some highlights of the renovation approach included: strongly improved thermal envelopes; detailed zoning for heating and a PV array that covers the annual electricity demand for the school; LED lighting; and double-glazed windows. Regarding interventions in the thermal envelope, priority was given to replacing the original roofs, since most of them contained traces of asbestos. On the other hand, the installation of PV array covering the electricity demands, allows an average reduction in primary energy needs between 40% and 50%, representing a considerable reduction in CO 2 emissions (between 2 and 9 tonnes per year/building).
The programme's estimated global investment is EUR 24 million.
