The Citizens' Dialogue on climate change and energy transition was held on May 3, 2024, at the Zagreb City Assembly at 9 am. The event was organised at the initiative of Joško Klisović (HR/PES), President of the City Assembly.

This Citizens' Dialogue lead to a platform collecting citizens' feedback on the European Green Deal, as well as the City of Zagreb's energy and climate policy, which will serve as guidelines for formulating messages for the new European Parliament and the European Commission on the future of the European Green Deal, but also for shaping the future energy and climate policy of the City of Zagreb.

The Dialogue worked as a feeder into another high-level conference, on 10 May 2023 with stakeholders from across the EU.

Participant's presences was key factor into developing innovative strategies and promoting sustainable urban energy infrastructure.

Citizens' have requested and the City Administration understood as recommendations and guidelines that citizens provided to the City authority:

  • Green transition to be more present it their lives through tangible projects rather than through sophisticated European and national political processes that are too difficult to understand.
  • Increasing of renewable energy in the local energy mix and expediting the transition from fossil fuels to renewables.
  • Higher energy efficiency of buildings.
  • Legal and financial boost to energy communities.
  • Stronger political commitment to protecting and expanding green infrastructure.
  • Citizens' health must be at the centre of the green transition.
  • Continuous engagement in dialogues on green transition.
