Dockside connections are currently the most effective way to reduce air emissions, significantly improving air quality and, consequently, the quality of life of harbour residents.
Adopted in 2019, the ‘Zero Smoke Stopover’ plan of the Sud-Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur Region provides for the financing of electrical devices to connect boats parked at berth in Marseille, Nice and Toulon, with an investment of EUR 30 million. This initiative aims to reduce emissions from shipping, much of which is generated by ships at berth.
This good practice complements the efforts of the region's main ports, including the Grand Port Maritime de Marseille, in areas such as shore-side electrification, LNG supply, and renewable energy generation, as well as the initiatives of some shipowners. The Region is committed to supporting these efforts politically and financially. The initiative is part of a broader energy and ecological transition strategy led by the Region through its Climate Plan.
