Your job and responsibilities

Are you interested in contributing to shaping the future EU policies related to Social policies and the New European Bauhaus? Being a part of a small and dynamic team, holding a wide set of responsibilities and having frequent contacts with politicians and members of the European Committee of the Regions (CoR)? 

Do you have a good understanding of the functioning of the EU institutions and of the CoR in particular? Do you possess a solid understanding of the interaction between administrative services and the political dimension of the CoR?

As a Policy Officer in the field of social policies and the New European Bauhaus in the in the SEDEC Commission, you will be responsible for:

  • Policy coordination, expert input, guidance and monitoring, and contribution to legislative and political works of the SEDEC Commission;
  • Providing high-quality policy support to members and promotion of CoR political messages in the relevant policy fields;
  • Contributing to preparation of SEDEC meetings and events, and other statutory meetings of the CoR;
  • Inspiration and management of relevant CoR studies;
  • Fostering regular contact and cooperation with counterparts in other EU institutions and external partners;
     

Who are we? What are the challenges for us ahead?

The SEDEC commission secretariat is one of the four Units that make up the Directorate for Legislative work 2. The main tasks of the Directorate are to prepare the political messages of the institution by assisting Members in drawing up CoR opinions, supporting the political process within the Bureau and Plenary Session, and organising commission meetings and external events. The key mission of the Directorate is to promote the effective involvement and contribution of the CoR in the decision-making process of the EU.

It plays a key role in framing and implementing the CoR's institutional and political strategies, and contributing to an improved, evidence-based, EU policy-making. An important element of this work is to provide analytical and organisational support to the political work of the institution, and to ensure the follow-up of CoR opinions, promoting and monitoring their impact.

Our Unit is composed of 12 staff members divided into three sectors:

  • Social and employment sector, including social housing, inclusion and diversity and skills;
  • Research and innovation sector;
  • Education, Youth, Culture and Sport sector

The SEDEC work programme for the years to come includes quite a number of political and challenging steps and the whole secretariat needs to be fully Committed and operational to put them in practice in the smoothest and coordinated way.

Job-specific requirements

  • You have passed EPSO CAST FGI/IV
  • You have an in-depth expertise and knowledge of policy and/or its implementation in areas of competence of the SEDEC commission, with main focus on all the measures related to the skills agenda and the New European Bauhaus.
  • You have solid experience interacting with numerous inter-institutional stakeholders and external partners, including coordination of common projects.
  • You have excellent drafting skills, both in the field of policy analysis and in the domain of policy briefings and dissemination.
  • You have a thorough knowledge of one of the official languages of the EU and a satisfactory knowledge of another of the EU official languages. For functional reasons, a very good command of English is required and a good command of French would be an advantage.
  • You have a good command of IT applications and tools (Outlook, Excel, Word, SharePoint, Teams, etc.).


Assets

  • A very good knowledge of the EU institutions, policies, as well as of the CoR, including strong appreciation of the different political stakeholders is a strong asset.
  • A university degree political science or other degrees connected to the remits of the SEDEC Commission.
  • Good communication skills and social media dynamics would be an asset.
  • Good command of other EU languages would be an additional asset

The European Committee of the Regions (CoR) is the political assembly which allows the views of regional and local authorities to be heard when European Union policies are being devised and legislation drafted. It is an advisory body which was created in 1994. Its consultative role allows its 329 members, and through them the regional and local authorities they represent, to take part in the EU decision-making process.
