This is the latest edition of the Green Deal Funding Alert, a monthly newsletter that keeps you informed about funding opportunities and initiatives that support sustainable development and the transition to climate neutrality. This edition shows you opportunities to apply for research and innovation funding in sustainable energy through the Horizon Europe Programme or to get recognition for your municipality’s efforts on renewables and energy efficiency by competing for the EU Sustainable Energy Awards 2025. We also share insights on mobilising financial resources to adapt to climate change by presenting the CoR’s study on adaptation financing mechanisms.
1. Call for sustainable energy supply and energy use research projects
Are you willing to contribute to the acceleration of the twin green and digital transition and help the EU reach its climate goals? Then make use of this funding opportunity for innovation and research!
Under the Horizon Europe Work Programme, two new calls of overall EUR 188.6 million are available to sustainable energy supply and use research projects, with a total of 18 different topics. The subject areas include electric mobility applications, measures for the market uptake of renewable energy systems, community-led photovoltaic systems, circular renovation workflows and digital solutions for participative planning of buildings and neighbourhoods. The research projects can include exploring the feasibility of a new or improved technology through the validation of small-scale prototypes or producing plans for new or improved products and processes through large-scale validation, testing and market replication.
Learn more about the Horizon Europe call for research projects.
Deadline for applying: 4 February 2025 (17.00 CET)
2. EU Sustainable Energy Awards 2025 – Local Energy Action
Does your municipality contribute to the clean energy transition at the local level and can it inspire others to implement similar solutions across the EU?
Get recognition for your work on renewable energy and energy efficiency, and celebrate the resulting wider social, economic and environmental benefits of your actions as a potential winner of the EU Sustainable Energy Awards 2025. Participate in the annual award competition of the European Commission and profit from added visibility for your work: a professional film crew will visit the finalists and promote them on social media and on pan-European and local media outlets.
Apply now to be considered for the EU Sustainable Energy Awards 2025.
Deadline for applying: 30 January 2025 (23.59 CET)
3. Adaptation financing mechanisms for action at the local and regional levels – CoR Study
Learn how to overcome the obstacles faced by local and regional authorities in mobilising funding for the implementation of adaptation projects and prepare for the inevitable impacts of climate change.
This study published by the European Committee of the Regions provides an overview of public and private adaptation financing availability, barriers and innovative solutions. It aims to help policymakers at all levels to put in place corrective measures and ensure that subnational governments have access to the financial resources necessary for effective climate adaptation. The study also presents four case studies from Sweden, Spain, France and Slovakia.

4. How to deliver a renovation revolution in Europe's buildings - A handbook
Learn how to accelerate the clean transition in the building sector and translate the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) into concrete regional action plans with tangible results!
Buildings are responsible for about 40% of total energy consumption in the EU, making ambitious and effective energy renovation in the housing sector a prerequisite to achieving the EU's climate targets. This Handbook, published by the Climate Group, provides a three step, practical guide on accelerating Europe's energy renovation rates. It also gives insights on how to strengthen collaboration, particularly through public-private partnerships, which will be indispensable to renovating at least 35 million buildings by 2030, as currently envisaged in the Union.
Read the Handbook and drive the change in the building sector!
