The urban master plan sets the fundamental strategic lines for the large and small resilience and the environmental transformations that will pass through Bologna in the next decades.

The city of Bologna showed its strong commitment to climate change issues through the BLUE AP LIFE+ project (Bologna Local Urban Environment Adaptation Plan for a resilient city) marked by a process of participation as a key factor for the plan; leading to the elaboration of the Climate Change Adaptation Plan for Bologna, which was approved in 2015.

Following the same path, in 2019 the city, with the new master plan document, proposed microclimate as one of the environmental aspects to be considered for urban planning. In the process of elaboration of the documents for the new master plan, the municipality, in collaboration with universities and research centres, expanded technical and scientific knowledge on the heat island by providing professionals and technicians with the knowledge to carry out microclimatic simulations.
