This best practice is based on a systemic vision of sustainability. The social, economic and environmental goals are merged in order to get a comprehensive idea of "regeneration's" ability to create a more resilient and collaborative community.
Salus Space is a regeneration plan that has been funded within the framework of the Urban Innovative Actions Initiative allowing the municipality of Bologna to demolish a former hospital that was in a state of decay and neglect and to create in its place a new innovative space, open to citizens, where the reception of refugees or disadvantaged families will be implemented with a wider vision of intercultural welfare, social and environmental wellbeing.
The new complex hosts a housing building with 20 dwellings and one accommodation facility, a multifunctional building with a restaurant, a theatre and three craft workshops, three types of gardens (educational, productive and recreational), a study centre (Think Tank for multicultural welfare) and a coworking space. The refugees will be involved in the co-management of these facilities.
From the construction point of view, the most innovative feature is the construction system used for the multi-storey residential building that consists of cross laminated timber panels (X-Lam) assembled directly on site and combined with a thermal coat to achieve the highest energetic insulation standards. The green roof, rainwater recovery systems and the thermal and photovoltaic panels complete the overall picture.
The opening of Salus Space is foreseen by January 2021. By that time the "collaborative management" structure will be ready to start two years of experimental management and will be monitored to provide feedback about the expected impact to the UIAs secretariat.
The total cost is: EUR 6.249.673,00, with EU co-funding of EUR 4.999.738,4 (equal to 80% of the total cost).
