This project shows that people are aware of the climate challenge – that a community like Wijnjewoude is taking responsibility for itself. The results, the way they have handled setbacks, and the network that has been built around the village all demand great respect.

The energy cooperative WEN was established by and for the village of Wijnjewoude. WEN recognises the importance of working towards a sustainable world. Its goal is energy neutrality in Wijnjewoude by 2025; this will be achieved by saving energy, improving insulation, and generating renewable energy using solar panels and green gas produced by fermenting locally available manure.

Key principles:

the energy transition is feasible and affordable for all residents;

everyone is important and involved.

Wijnjewoude's approach is an inspiring example for many other villages, and it is therefore a pilot village for the municipality of Opsterland and the province of Friesland. It has also been lauded at national level, for example winning first prize in the 2019 "Rural Pioneers" awards.
