The European Committee of the Regions (CoR) and the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (JRC) have joined forces to empower local and regional authorities in strengthening disaster resilience, ensuring that communities are better prepared for the challenges posed by climate change and extreme weather events, such as floods, wildfires, and heatwaves.
The Vulnerability Dashboard is an innovative interactive tool requested by the European Committee of the Regions and developed by the JRC to help understand, measure and monitor the vulnerabilities of European territories to disasters. By analysing indicators across five dimensions (social, economic, political, environmental, and physical), this tool provides insights down to NUTS3 level, measuring risks over time. This data-driven instrument is essential for policymakers, as it enables them to make informed decisions aimed at enhancing disaster resilience within their communities.
The story map “Success Stories of Investing in Disaster Resilience” presents five inspiring case studies that highlight how local and regional authorities across Europe are effectively investing in disaster resilience, based on the CoR publication “Local and regional success stories of investing in disaster resilience”.
These projects exemplify the important synergy between science and policy, showcasing how data-driven insights can enhance decision-making processes. By bringing together empirical evidence and real local experiences, the story map serves as a powerful tool for inspiring actions that mitigate risks and promote resilience across the European Union.
