Geographical Indications (GIs) are key drivers of competitiveness, sustainability and territorial identity in European agri-food systems. Against the backdrop of the 2024 EU GI Regulation and evolving policy discussions, this one-day European workshop, representing the 4th meeting of the GI SMART EU MAP, will bring together policymakers, public authorities, researchers and GI stakeholders to discuss the evolving role of Geographical Indications and GI producer groups in Europe under the new EU regulatory framework.

The event will present the European Committee of the Regions study “How Local and Regional Authorities Support the Recognition and Development of Geographical Indications in their Territory”, on the support provided by local and regional authorities to GIs and will explore national approaches to the recognition of GI producer groups across EU Member States.

The afternoon sessions will focus on practical experiences from the wine and food sectors, highlighting how producer groups contribute to value creation, collective action and the long-term sustainability of GIs through interactive discussions and roundtables.
