On 16 June 2025, the SEDEC Commission of the European Committee of the Regions will host a high-level conference in Sliema, Malta, under the theme: “Harnessing Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI)".

Organised in partnership with the Maltese authorities, the event will bring together local and regional leaders, EU policymakers, experts, and stakeholders to explore how generative AI can support regions and cities in delivering smart, inclusive, and sustainable solutions.

The conference will include addresses by:

  • Byron Camilleri, Minister for Home Affairs, Security and Employment of Malta
  • Clyde Caruana, Minister for Finance of Malta
  • Tanya Hristova, Mayor of gabrovo, First Vice-Chair of the SEDEC Commission, CoR
  • Alberto Cirio, President of Piedmont region, Chair of the ECON Commission, CoR
  • Emil Boc, Mayor of Cluj-Napoca, former Prime Mininster of Romania, CoR rapporteur on the Union of Skills, CoR

And a special video intervention by Glenn Micallef, Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture and Sport.

The agenda includes three thematic sessions:

  • AI and Skills: Exploring AI's role in education, training, and workforce development
  • AI for Sustainability: Using AI for climate action, smart cities, and regional resilience
  • AI and the Future of Work: Addressing the impact of AI on labour markets and employment rights

Speakers will also include CoR rapporteurs, representatives from the European Commission, OECD, CEDEFOP, academic experts and others.

This conference will feed into SEDEC's broader efforts to promote social fairness and skills development across EU regions, ensuring that local and regional authorities play a central role in shaping Europe's AI future.
