The theme of this panel discussion, organised by CoR member Tsvetelina Simeonova-Zarkin (BG/Renew), is particularly relevant in the context of European cities’ efforts to promote active mobility, improve air quality, reduce noise and traffic pressure, and create a safer and more accessible environment for children, young people, and families.
An additional focus within the framework of the event is the connection with the Giro d’Italia, which passes through Sofia. This provides an opportunity to place the conversation about cycling not only in a sporting context, but also in a social, urban planning, and European context.
The main aim of the discussion is to bring together representatives of local government, the diplomatic corps, civil society, and young people in a shared conversation on how Sofia can develop as a cleaner, safer, and more liveable European city.
The event aims to:
- Connect the celebration of Europe Day with a concrete topic from citizens’ everyday lives;
- Present European perspectives and good practices related to cycling and active mobility;
- Highlight the opportunities for Sofia to improve its urban environment;
- Include the perspective of young people and civil society organizations;
- Encourage partnership between institutions, diplomatic missions, and civil society.
The event will be held in the format of a single joint panel - a moderated discussion with the participation of representatives of different institutions and sectors. The questions addressed to the participants will be tailored to their profile and expertise.
