Fluvial freshwater habitat recovery through geomorphic-based mine ecological restoration in Iberian Peninsula (Life RIBERMINE)

Helyszín: Peñalén, Castile-La Mancha, Spanyolország

Ezen az oldalon:

  • Zero pollution in air, water, and soil
  • Biodiversity and protected areas
  • Waste reduction and management

This project will demonstrate that mining is feasible in areas of high natural value, restoring functional and biodiverse ecosystems and landscapes. RIBERMINE develops solutions that will serve as an example for the ecological restoration of degraded areas in other regions.

LIFE RIBERMINE follows a holistic approach to mine restoration, with an ecological focus and applying what is known as "Best Available Techniques" (BAT). The project applies advanced methodologies in geo-technology and geomorphological restoration (GeoFluv-Natural Regrade and Talud ROYAL).

Landscape development models (SIBERIA) are used to assess stability against erosion. Specific techniques are applied for handling the edaphic substratum and surface, combined with different strategies for re-vegetation and for reintroducing fauna. Advanced knowledge is also applied to mitigate acid mine drainage. In addition, water quality and the aquatic ecosystems affected by physical (Alto Tajo) and chemical (Lousal) contamination is monitored, in order to confirm whether their condition has improved.

Objectives:

  • improve aquatic habitats and water quality of two waterways affected by mining, by restoring their functions, assets and the services they provide, and increasing their benefits to the population;

  • adapt and implement a combination of BAT for the restoration of sites degraded by mining. For the first time in Europe, the joint and integrated use of all of them is being proposed, while seeking to transfer the results to other mining areas;

  • help stimulate and promote the economic development of two regions which are traditionally linked to mining and which are currently very sparsely populated with few resources for employment.
