In view of the upcoming EU elections in 2024, Ms María Isabel URRUTIA DE LOS MOZOS (EPP/ES) organized an EU Local Dialogue with young people of Cantabria.
EU legislation impacts most of people's priorities: the environment, security, migration, social policies, consumer rights, the economy, the rule of law and many more. Today, all important national issues also have a European dimension. This Local Youth Dialogue structured around the points identified in the European Parliament's official communication campaign and consisted on three round tables for young people on Policy and Institutions, Society and Economy and Europeans in Cantabria.
Most of the participants took the stand and contributed in the debate: 15 young people from Cantabria, the president of the Cantabria Youth Council, young politicians representing the political parties represented in the regional parliament, young people from other countries living in Cantabria and young people representing different sectors of the society (culture, research, agriculture, entrepreneurship…). This was done in the presence of members of the regional parliament, members of the government, university students, young politicians, young farmers, young artist, young journalists, former CoR members…
The Youth Local Dialogue focused on:
- Stimulating the civic participation of young people;
- Engaging in dialogue with young people and help them understand, in practical terms, how the European Union works and what the European Parliament and these elections represent;
- Mobilising and listen to the expectations of young Cantabrians.
The event concluded in some recommendations for action as:
- There is a need to promote more debates in which young people can express themselves freely and share their ideas about the Europe they want.
- The number of young people on the electoral lists for the European Parliament should be increased.
- Ways must be found to make life easier for entrepreneurs, for young farmers, for those who decide to work independently and create businesses that create jobs and have a positive impact on the regions.
- Measures need to be put in place to prevent the flight of young talent to the big cities.
