Restoring green spaces around blocks of buildings to a level where they can properly fulfil their mitigation function is key to ensuring a favourable micro-climate in residential neighbourhoods and improving the balance between the city's natural and man-made elements.
A comprehensive scheme to restore and improve spaces around blocks of flats (residential greenery) is to be carried out under strategy documents adopted by Sofia Municipality. Consisting of a comprehensive package of reconstruction, upgrading and landscaping, it will involve more than 2 029 ha in all of the municipality's 24 districts. It will both improve the municipality's potential to adapt to climate change and give people more access to green spaces, recreational areas and outdoor leisure and sport.
Increasing the amount of green space will mitigate the urban heat island effect in the most vulnerable parts of the city, ease the strain on large urban parks and give people direct access to outdoor leisure and recreation areas, which is particularly important as the COVID 19 pandemic rages. Alongside its environmental and social benefits, the programme will also bring economic dividends.
