The energy village in Blankenrath is a perfect example of a change coming from civil society impetus. It shows that projects can be optimised, so that complex and long-term viable internal development projects are possible even in smaller communities.
Since summer 2015, the municipalities of Alf, Alflen, Blankenrath, Müllenbach and the city of Zell have been part of the district-wide “Cochem-Zeller Energiedorf" project.
Blankenrath, thanks to the large financial support of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate, is one of five energy villages in the district that are currently trying to set up a local heating supply network in each of their
communities. The heat is obtained from wood that comes from the local forests (wood chips from residual forest wood) and solar thermal. This strengthens the added value in the region.
The implementation of the “Dorfwärme" project will begin by spring 2021 and be completed with the commissioning of the networks and connection of household in 2023.
As a particular advantage, it is planned to provide all users with a direct optical fibre connection (FTTH) at the same time as the local heating network is laid. This gives the residents the option of "fast internet".
This project is also being helped by volunteers who are active in the various working groups within these communities informing interested citizens at numerous information evenings, advisory days and consultations about the concept of a local district heating supply - the Dorfwärme Blankenrath.
