Highlights of the meeting on 14 June 2024
The following opinion will be discussed and adopted:
First discussion and adoption
- Promotion of roots tourism for sustainable local revitalisation - Giuseppe VARACALLI (Renew Europe/IT)
The main aim of this opinion is to highlight the potential of roots tourism for all regions and municipalities of Europe, providing evidence of its economic and cultural potential on local concerns, proposing solutions, thus feeding into the reflection on the future of EU tourism. Tourism is one of NAT's priority areas and this opinion will be an opportunity to build on the policy messages from previous opinions. Roots tourism, also known as "genealogy tourism" or "diaspora tourism" is a broader segment of the tourism market consisting of tourists who have ancestral connections to their holiday destination. As such, it is intrinsically connected to heritage, gastronomy, culture as well as other key policies -sustainable development, rural areas, transport, connectivity and the socio-economic development of towns, villages and regions. The opinion will also provide an occasion to take stock of the achievements of the tourism strategy post COVID and to reflect on how local and regional authorities can best respond to new opportunities and challenges.
Agenda
Other points on the agenda will be:
- Debate on the future of the Common Agricultural Policy, in the presence of the Chair of the Strategic Dialogue, Professor Peter Strohschneider.
- Cooperation with the FAO
- Follow-up to the opinion on "European Health Data Space"
