The electricity consumed in regional administration facilities in Andalusia is 100% renewable thanks to a new centralised electricity supply contract.
Andalusia has the largest regional administration in Spain, in terms of staff, public buildings and infrastructure. It also likes to think of itself as one of the administrations most committed to curbing climate change.
The region also consumes a great deal of energy: at about 950 GWh, its energy demand is about half that of the country of Ireland.
Conscious of its responsibility to serve as an example and the potential impact of the region's energy needs, the government of Andalusia has signed an electricity supply contract guaranteeing that 100% of the electricity consumed at the regional administration's facilities must come from renewable sources.
The regional government believes the shift will benefit not just the climate, but the region's economy – Andalusia is one of the major producers of renewable energy in Europe.
