The May 6, 1976 Friuli earthquake was a defining tragedy in Italian history, claiming nearly a thousand lives and devastating the region’s heritage. Yet, the rapid reconstruction phase became an internationally recognized model of emergency management, driven by community involvement and institutional cooperation to restore local identity.
Promoted by the Regional Council of Friuli Venezia Giulia for the disaster's 50th anniversary, this photographic exhibition chronicles both the destruction and the extraordinary resilience of the population. Featuring poignant archives from the Centro Ricerca e Archiviazione della Fotografia (CRAF) and vital documentation by Udine’s "Giovanni Sello" Art Institute, the display highlights a collective and exemplary rebuilding effort.
Ultimately, the exhibition invites reflection on the earthquake’s enduring legacy. It honors not only the physical rebirth of the region but also the creation of crucial institutions like the Civil Protection system and the University of Udine, standing as a lasting testament to solidarity and civic responsibility.
Access to the buildings of the EU institutions is possible but regulated. Only persons registered at an event (conference, meeting, etc.) in the JDE building where the exhibition is hosted can visit the exhibition.
