President Cordeiro presents the state of regions and cities in Europe and opens European Week of Regions and Cities

Speakers at the #CoRplenary agenda include: European Commissioner Ferreira, EIB President Calviño, and European Parliament Vice-President Omarjee. 

On 7 October, the President of the European Committee of the Regions, Vasco Alves Cordeiro, will present the 2024 report on the State of Regions and Cities. This year's edition focuses on local democracy, the green transition, cohesion policy and investment, and enlargement and Ukraine.

The presentation of the report also marks the opening of the European Week of Regions and Cities, the largest event in the EU for local and regional authorities, promoted jointly by the European Committee of the Regions and the European Commission.

EU regional and local leaders will gather in the plenary session of the European Committee of the Regions on 8 and 9 October. The plenary features a resolution on the State of Regions and Cities in the EU and the political guidelines for the incoming European Commission, which will serve from 2024 to 2029.

The plenary will also include debates: on investment opportunities for cities and regions, with Nadia Calviño, President of the European Investment Bank; on the work of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU; and on enlargement, looking at the lessons of the EU's 2004 enlargement and looking ahead. Regional and municipal leaders will also provide testimony about the impact of recent floods, fires and other extreme weather events on their communities.

The CoR's legislative work will be reflected in 11 sets of recommendations – ranging from implementation of the EU's Pact on Migration and Asylum and of the post-COVID recovery plan to recommendations to strengthen the Single Market, create a European data space, and to improve the European wind-power action plan and the EU's innovation and research programme.

Tuesday, 8 October, 5.25 p.m.: Debate on the priorities of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the EU, with Barna Pál Zsigmond, Deputy Minister of the Ministry of European Union Affairs of Hungary. Hungary has set seven priorities for its Presidency: a new European competitiveness deal; the reinforcement of European defence policy; a consistent and merit-based enlargement policy; stemming illegal migration; shaping the future of Cohesion Policy; a Farmer-Centred EU agricultural policy; and addressing demographic challenges.

Wednesday, 9 October, 9.40 a.m.: Statements by EU regions and cities on recent extreme weather events exacerbated by the climate crisis.

Wednesday, 9 October, 11.20 a.m.: Debate on investment opportunities for cities and regions, with Nadia Calviño, President of the European Investment Bank. The debate is expected to focus on the role of the EU's bank in supporting the green and digital transitions and the objective set out by the European Commission to work with the EIB to establish a pan-European investment platform for affordable and sustainable housing.
