This project is a transnational and interdisciplinary programme designed to connect various Mediterranean countries facing similar challenges and opportunities. Its aim is to develop and promote sustainable urban and territorial planning practices.

Since 2019, Project Cool City has been exploring ways to revitalise the ancient aqueducts, cisterns, and fountains in Naples, aiming to mitigate urban heat islands caused by global warming and urban developments. By accessing cool water and air from the city's forgotten underground infrastructure, dating back to the Ancient Greek and Roman periods, the project seeks to create new community spaces that promote an ecological future.

Revisiting the vital role of water in the city's life and culture, Project Cool City is a key component of a larger initiative to rekindle the essential relationship between water and the people of Naples.

The project aspires to envision the Biennale of Water Naples 2026—a transnational, interdisciplinary programme linking various Mediterranean countries with similar challenges and opportunities. The goal is to develop and promote sustainable urban and territorial planning, using water as a communal instrument for exchanges and connections between nature and humanity.

Project Cool City will delve into the hydrology of Naples, exploring its diverse waters and minerals shaped by the region's unique volcanic biodiversity. Collaboration will involve environmental engineers, biologists, urban sociologists, archaeologists, ecologists, environmental geologists, architects, urban designers, participatory artists, and more, through ongoing partnerships with universities, action groups, and national and international institutes and agencies focused on water. Special attention will be given to the urban, architectural, and cultural heritage of Naples and other Mediterranean cities.
