This project increases capacity for treating separately collected bio-waste and ensures that all municipalities in Extremadura have composting facilities that are close by.
The Integrated Waste Plan of Extremadura 2016-2022 (PIREX) is an essential instrument of waste policy which seeks to promote the prevention and more efficient management of waste throughout Extremadura’s territory.
Bio-waste accounts for the majority of municipal waste generated in Extremadura. achieving separate collection and proper treatment is therefore key to achieving the ecological recovery objectives set out in European and Spanish legislation.
Under the development of PIREX, a network of 12 county plants for the decentralised treatment of bio-waste using aerobic technology (composting) will be built, so that all municipalities in the region have a composting plant which is no more than 35 km away.
