In a logistical hub for road freight transport and light duty vehicles, a pilot project has been proposed that entails a decarbonised complex of zero-emissions buildings, with anti-COVID measures and forming an "energy island", together with the installation of a photovoltaic plant and hydrogen fuelling station.
Extremadura and Alentejo are two European regions interconnected by territory, various infrastructure and a joint project called SOIH2. This project has identified hydrogen not only as an energy carrier for the transition, but also as an opportunity to participate in an inclusive way in the new implementation cycle, and to stimulate the socio-economic development of the ALEX meso-region (Alentejo — Extremadura) in the south west of the Iberian Peninsula. ALEX has taken an interest in hydrogen since late 2019, and a civil society-based interdisciplinary working group has been set up (mainly Loabre and Adral), with people, institutions and businesses seeking to carry out forward-looking actions and make forward-looking proposals for pilot or demonstration projects that promote the market around hydrogen.
In the decarbonisation timeframes of 2030 and 2050, renewable energies, both electric and thermal, are primary resources for that change; and hydrogen emerges as an energy carrier, as a bridge or instrument for channelling energy towards consumption and as a basis for change in almost all economic sectors: transport, industry, etc.
The pilot centre for the development of an integrated hydrogen environment is called ALEX SHVS. There is a demonstration building for technological innovations in: zero-emissions, anti-COVID measures, high energy efficiency and cybersecurity. It will be a pilot project for the development of the network of hydrogen-fuelling stations and their integration into the international decarbonised hubs.
