Sprakebüll shows what's possible when committed and bold members of the public join forces to create room for innovation in their local area. The municipality has also demonstrated that e-mobility and carsharing are attractive solutions for rural services of general interest.
With community wind farms, solar farms with public participation, a non-profit community foundation, its own local heating network owned by the municipality and the highest concentration of electric cars in Germany, Sprakebüll – a small village with 250 inhabitants on the very edge of Germany, in a very rural, primarily agricultural region – has been on the road to sustainability since as early as 1998 and cleverly combines this with rural services of general interest.
There are currently just under 30 electric cars in Sprakebüll for these 250 or so inhabitants. By using these cars, the villagers save an estimated 40 tonnes of CO 2 a year. Villagers who have bought or leased an electric car quickly overcame their initial scepticism through test drives. Moreover, the village's shared electric car, or Dörpsmobil , has enabled many to get rid of their second car. This project is also organised by the community, through the association set up for this purpose: e-Mobiles Dorf Sprakebüll e.V. Local volunteers repair, clean and charge the car. Sprakebüll now also has a rapid charging station.
The public house, fire station and 52 households in the village centre are connected to the municipality-owned local heating network. New housing developments are also being connected. It was calculated that this saves 290 tonnes in CO 2 emissions every year. The heating network is about 2.5 kilometres long and the annual savings in heating oil amount to around 150,000 litres.
