The Technical Office makes it possible to involve as many as municipalities as possible, maximising resources. For most of the municipalities that join the Covenant, it would be too hard to be part of the initiative without the support provided.
The Regional Government, Xunta de Galicia, is the Coordinator of the Covenant of Mayors (CoM) for Climate and Energy in the Autonomous Community of Galicia since 2018.
In its role as Coordinator, Xunta de Galicia is highly involved in promoting and supporting Galician municipalities in their joining of the CoM. The goal is to ensure that in 2020 most of the municipalities in Galicia will be signatories to this initiative.
In order to achieve this objective, Xunta de Galicia has created the Covenant of Mayors Technical Office in Galicia that has been giving support to the municipalities. As a result, 224 Galician municipalities out of 313 have joined the Covenant of Mayors as signatories so far.
The CoM Technical Office in Galicia is responsible for informing and advising the municipalities about the initiative of the Covenant but also for assisting them in fulfilling the commitments established. The support provided by the Technical Office includes administrative and technical assistance such as for the drafting of documents. It also supports municipalities in the search for financial instruments for their project against climate change. Other activities are the promotion and improvement of networking among the stakeholders and publicity for their activities and achievements.
This action is part of the Galician Strategy for Climate Change and Energy 2050, which aims to achieve neutral GHG emissions for 2050.
