This Regional Wind strategy:
- contributes largely to EU and Dutch renewable targets
- contributes to more wind energy in future
- ensure that new wind turbines will enhance the landscape
- ensure local stakeholders and community have the opportunity to participate in their own windfarms
- ensure that the benefits stay the region

The Dutch province of Flevoland has developed a special strategy to produce more wind energy with less wind turbines. It did this by inviting the local stakeholders to develop their own windfarms in areas that it pointed out. The permission for a new windfarm is given when the local developers assure the decommissioning of the current wind turbines in the area and when they organise participation for the whole community. In that way, it becomes a project of the local people and the benefits stay in the region.

Nowadays, there are over 600 wind turbines in the province, which represent 1150 MW of installed power, or over 35% of Dutch installed power. The Dutch province wants to produce even more wind energy to contribute to the European target of at least 32% of energy from renewable sources by 2030.

Flevoland however, accounts for a proportion of nearly 25% of the Dutch target, producing 1390 MW out of 6000 MW wind energy.
