Under the CircVol project, meadows have been created together with a circular economy cultivation trial and non-food pilot project, with a view to piloting the use of recycled materials and a form of landscaping that draws on such materials.
The Välimaa "pollination site" cultivation area was established on the landfill site of the former municipality of Kiiminki. In creating the pollination area, use was made of a sediment or rather the by-products produced by a paper mill. In addition to the sediment, the pollination area has been used to study the use of recycled nutrients (decomposed material and ash from a biogas plant).
A flower meadow mix, landscape grass mix and energy willows have been planted in the area. In addition to the pollination area, other flower meadow pilot sites have been established. The pilot areas of the CircVol project serves as a bellwether for an increasing number of biodiversity-enhancing areas in cities, urban plans and even industrial areas. Pollinators benefit from this practice.
