Through the project, Northern Finland and Oulun Energia will acquire know-how on mechanical processing of waste, with an increased recycling rate at regional level. It will facilitate the emergence of new business activities and contribute to carbon-neutral energy production at regional level.

The Oulun Energia waste sorting plant (OEKITA) sorts mixed construction waste, non-bio mixed household waste and mixed commercial and industrial waste collected in Northern Finland.

OEKITA triples the regional capacity for the automatic, mechanical processing of waste, with the potential to triple the region's waste recycling rate. The further processing of recycled materials can bring business and green jobs to the region. The experience of mechanical sorting may, in future, also help increase capacity for other kinds of waste, such as municipal waste.

The sorting plant also produces recovered fuel (SRF) for Oulun Energia's biofuel plant. Part of the recovered fuel is non-biowaste, and so this is one path towards achieving a more carbon-neutral energy production. OEKITA also has a solar power plant that produces 217 kW of electricity for its own consumption. The fine material that results from sorting can be used for field construction.
