The development of an economically viable value chain for the use of local residual wood resources has played a key role in generating added value in the underdeveloped municipality of Kleines Wiesental, as well as helping to meet the goal of net zero greenhouse gas emissions.

In the municipality of Kleines Wiesental, three heating networks were initiated, designed and built and became operational, in cooperation with the local energy supplier and Zweckverband Breitbandversorgung Landkreis Lörrach (special-purpose association for broadband supply for the rural district of Lörrach).

The association Erneuerbare Energien Kleines Wiesental (Renewable Energy for Kleines Wiesental) kept the public informed, working with local residents to collect data as a basis for creating the design. Information events and inauguration ceremonies were held and support was provided during the construction stage, with the help of representatives of the municipal authorities and the local energy supplier.

In the district of Tegernau, heat is supplied by a 200-kW wood chip boiler.

In the district of Wies, a 450-kW wood chip boiler and a thermal solar system were installed. In the district of Neuenweg, a 200-kW wood chip boiler supplies heat. All the systems are equipped with large buffer tanks of up to 25 000 litres.
