By encouraging students to get to school on their own, Kungsbacka is aiming at multiple benefit such as fewer cars at school or fresher children

On their own, a recurring challenge for middle school students is to get to school on - just that - their own legs. The aim is, among other things, to strengthen students' self-confidence, make them more alert and increase their awareness of sustainable travel. The challenge is structured as an exciting point hunt where the class is involved in competing for great prizes that this year will be in the form of gift cards for activities that the class chooses for themselves. During the autumn weeks (weeks 38-42) that are going on on their own, students simultaneously accumulate a wealth of valuable knowledge through exercises on road safety, health, sustainable development and the environment.

Fewer cars at school

Almost a fifth of middle school pupils are taken daily by car to school. At that age, it is important for children to discover that they are able to get around on their own, it strengthens their confidence. At the same time, reduced driving contributes to a safer and more pleasant local environment around the school.

Fresher children

Children who move become more alert, feel better and have easier concentration. In addition, a child who is active growing up is at a lower risk of developing diseases and other disorders later in life. Sustainable travel is one of the most important challenges that the future brings with it. Starting now, to and from school, is a good start.

Classes collect points in the challenge in different ways. When students walk, cycle or travel by public transport to and from school, they collect points. In addition, if students get a parent or sibling to do the same, they will receive additional points. They also do various exercises in the class related to traffic and the environment.
