It is estimated that some 1.3 billion tonnes of food are thrown away around the world, with around 9 million tonnes being thrown away in Poland. Therefore, educating the public about how to avoid food waste, and about the circular economy in general, is very important both for consumers and for businesses and researchers.
In 2019, the Dolnośląskie region launched a series of events to promote the reduction of waste among the inhabitants of the region, businesses and public institutions.
The first official event of the "Lower Silesia doesn't waste" educational campaign was the conference "I use – I don't waste! Sustainable food consumption as part of the transition to a circular economy", held in Wrocław in December 2019. Its main objective was to explore the problem of food waste as one of the priority areas of the circular economy, and to identify what consumers, businesses and researchers can change in order to reduce the amount of food waste.
Despite the COVID-19 outbreak, the circular economy continues to be promoted and the problem of food waste publicised in 2020. Two conferences on the subject are due to be held in the region in the autumn.
