Annually funding diverse studies regarding the quantification of food loss and waste and its economic and environmental impact has created awareness among the key stakeholders of the agri-food sector. These studies and guidelines are always done with the involvement of key stakeholders.

Three years ago, the Catalan government started financing studies to generate knowledge concerning the quantification of food loss and waste and its economic and environmental impact on the fruit sector, as well as studies researching upcycling opportunities to prevent food loss and waste. Every year, the Catalan government funds diverse studies regarding the quantification of food loss and waste and its economic and environmental impact on the key agri-food sectors in Catalonia.

Until now, studies included the meat sector, fruits and vegetables and the bakery sector. The result is a consolidated partnership between the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food, CREDA and IRTA, the most important research centre in the agri-food sector in Catalonia.

The annual studies regarding the quantification of food loss and waste, its main causes, and its economic and environmental impact have shed light on the situation regarding food loss and waste throughout the food supply chain. On top of that, involving the key stakeholders in the studies has created interest and enlightened some companies and organisations to act to prevent and reduce food loss and waste.

The same method has been used to elaborate the voluntary guidelines and principles to implement a food loss and food waste prevention and reduction plan in agri-food companies and a document with the main guidelines for a safe gleaning.
