The project aims to implement Natura 2000.The Länder of North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony wanted to carry out a transnational project to improve the conservation status of species and habitats in the Atlantic region. For this large-scale approach and the conceptual work, the "Integrated Projects" strand of the LIFE programme seemed appropriate.
By means of this cross-border project, the federal Länder (states) of North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony aim to help reverse the trend of biodiversity loss and valuable natural areas.
The first pillar of the project aims to develop a methodological and conceptual approach to achieving Objective 1 of the EU Biodiversity Strategy and to implementing the national Priority Action Framework (PAF) in all Länder of the Atlantic region. In Germany, nature conservation is the responsibility of the individual Länder. However, for nature conservation achievements to be visible at national or biogeographic level, it is helpful if a model approach to implementing the PAF in the Atlantic region is developed jointly at this cross-cutting level. This means that the first pillar of the project will develop a "road map" for improving all habitat types and species in the Atlantic region (excluding marine habitat types and species). The second pillar of the project includes the implementation of concrete measures to improve the conservation status in Natura 2000 areas of the sand landscapes in North Rhine-Westphalia and Lower Saxony, with the aim of improvements on the ground. The results from the first pillar thus already feed directly into the implementation of the project by providing a basis for selecting the implementing measures to be taken.
