The local dialogue "The future of housing estates in the European Union" organised by Patrik Schwarcz-Kiefer (HU/NI) in the municipality of Mohács, Hungary, aimed to the initiation of a debate in the most densely populated residential area of the city, about the development opportunities for the housing estate build some 50 years ago.

As the EU's goals of greening and increasing energy efficiency are of paramount importance for the area, the residents need to become familiar with these EU policies. It is also important for them to see positive European examples which can be later used to shape their living environment, through collective decision-making.

The format of the event included both presentations, engaging discussions among the local residents and members of the city council of Mohács, that took part. From this dialogue some key proposals for future actions were defined:

  • Initiation of EU pilot projects for the energy modernization of panel buildings, starting first in Hungary.
  • Development of district heating services, installation of individual meters and regulators.
  • Examination of further Western European examples to prepare a comprehensive programme.
