At a time when there is increasing talk of the risks of the negative effects of climate change, it is essential to take preventive measures to protect the environment and ensure a sustainable and safe environment for the lives of the citizens.

Best practices were implemented by the Košice Self-Governing Region within the Landscape Recovery Project launched in 2018 in response to the degradation of the quality of the environment, the challenges associated with climate change and finally as a reaction to the poor water management resulting frequently in negative consequences, such as floods, droughts and other risks of sudden natural disasters and extreme heat in the Košice Region.

The implementation of the rainwater retention elements has a great potential to contribute positively and efficiently to the restoration of the biodiversity processes, to increase soil fertility, to the creation of water resources and to the healing of the climate.

What's more, rainwater retention measures such as rain gardens in secondary schools are highly beneficial in terms of low-cost and high efficiency. In addition to that, the whole initiative includes educational and social aspects. It aims to teach students how to approach the environment in a friendly way. On the social plan, the Landscape Recovery Programme contributes positively to creating new employment opportunities in less economically efficient Slovak regions and thus reducing regional disparities.
