The European Committee of the Regions (CoR) is preparing an Opinion on "The future of EU climate policy: aligning mitigation targets and adaptation challenges", led by rapporteur Markku MARKKULA, President of the Helsinki Region. In this framework, the CoR is organizing a stakeholders' consultation on 13 June 2024 from 14.30 to 16.30 CET

This event will provide the rapporteur with inputs to support the preparation of the draft opinion. The rapporteur invites different actors to discuss about these main aspects:

  • The actions in order to reinforce the implementation of climate adaptation and enhance the resilience of EU territories from a local perspective
  • The policies in order to step up the EU systemic transformation at the local and regional level and enhance the EU capacity of reaching its mitigation targets while leaving no one behind.
  • The instruments and measures to fill the financing gap for the green transition and ensure an effective climate mainstreaming in the EU budget.
  • Possible strategic measures designed to accelerate essential processes, such as achieving breakthroughs in technology and societal innovations, and revitalizing financing practices, all aimed at reaching the EU's targets.

The calendar of the opinion is the following:

  • Exchange of views on 25 June in the ENVE commission
  • Adoption by the ENVE commission on 26 September
  • Adoption by CoR Plenary on 20-21 November
