Close cooperation between internal specialists and external players enables the expertise network to create and coordinate tools that local authorities can use to develop and effectively implement their energy and climate policies.

Using Flemish resources, the Association of Flemish Cities and Municipalities (VVSG) is developing a network consisting of a professional internal team of specialists and a framework for cooperation with relevant external players regarding local energy and climate policies.

This professional support focuses on various action areas and general goals:

  • ensure that local authorities' public assets serve as examples in terms of saving energy;

  • encourage the development of local policy plans for promoting renewable energy and energy efficiency;

  • act as an intermediary coordinator and point of contact between the Flemish government and local authorities with regard to local energy and climate policies;

  • provide breakthrough projects with guidance and knowledge;

  • actively centralise and make available local energy and climate policy best practices via an interactive database;

  • identify existing local energy and climate policy data sets and determine additional data needs;

  • find and actively come up with financial solutions for local energy and climate policies.

In this way, this network of internal and external players is building up professional and practical support for local authorities in developing and implementing their energy and climate policies.
