About the Award

The EU Organic Awards are jointly organised by the European Commission, the European Committee of the Regions (CoR),  the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), the Committee of Professional Agricultural Organisations and the General Confederation of Agricultural Cooperatives (COPA-COGECA) and the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM) Organics Europe. The awards aim to recognise excellence along the organic value chain, rewarding the best and most innovative actors in organic production in the EU.

They are the first example of EU-wide organic awards and are conceived as a follow-up to the Action Plan for the development of organic production, adopted by the Commission on 25 March 2021. The Action Plan highlights that, in order to stimulate organic production, consumer demand for organic products should grow. This requires, amongst others, increased public awareness of the characteristics and benefits of organic production. To support this idea, it introduced annual awards recognising innovative and sustainable projects that add value to organic production and consumption.

The EU Organic Awards scheme comprises 6 categories and 7 awards. The CoR is responsible for two awards: "Best organic region/bio-district" and "Best organic city".  Since 2021, the awards have been presented annually on September 23, which is European Organic Day. The winners obtain visibility, recognition, credibility, and promotional opportunities at EU level, representing the central added value of the EU Organic Awards.
