A unique project at regional level in France, the Green New Deal covers every field of regional activity and draws on a wide range of expertise: that of specialists, elected representatives, and advocacy groups, but above all that of citizens through a convention and a public vote.

Launched on 16 July 2020, the Green Deal for Occitanie is a project to debate with citizens about the post-crisis world and build the future together with them, responding to the challenges of economic recovery, social justice and climate change.

The approach is based on "co-construction", with a convention and a public vote transmitted on the region's collaborative site.

The region has already embarked on the first stage of its Green Deal: to restore a healthy, balanced food system based on short supply chains that is accessible to all and provides local producers with a decent living. A total budget of EUR 24 million would need to be earmarked for 2020-21 to achieve this, with an estimated leverage effect of EUR 75 million.

Occitanie has explicitly placed the fight against climate change at the heart of its future Green Deal, as demonstrated by two flagship projects:

  1. support by the region for the move of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) to Toulouse in summer 2021;
  2. the Corridor H2 Occitanie project to accelerate the transition to a zero-emission, green hydrogen heavy vehicle sector. This Europe-wide project is intended to support the development of a fleet of hydrogen-powered heavy vehicles with electric refrigerator units, as well as hydrogen filling stations along the region's strategic routes.
