The innovative solutions and cooperation models at Kakola Wastewater Treatment Plant contribute to local climate targets and positively impact the vulnerable Baltic Sea.
The City of Turku aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2029, coinciding with its 800th anniversary. Meeting this ambitious goal requires action within the water management sector to enhance its sustainability, energy efficiency, and climate resilience.
Turku, along with 14 surrounding municipalities and other stakeholders, has worked diligently to provide innovative and high-quality drinking water production alongside wastewater treatment for over 300,000 residents in the region.
Currently, Turku's wastewater treatment activities generate ten times more energy than they consume, and the production of excellent quality drinking water is achieved through an ecological artificial groundwater infiltration method. Citizens are encouraged to adopt sustainable water consumption practices through campaigns focused on reducing water usage.
These solutions are readily scalable to other cities and can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving energy efficiency, and combating groundwater shortages.
