Our project will accelerate the climate work of secondary schools in Northern Ostrobothnia by providing them with the tools for change, as well as peer-to-peer and expert support. We are looking at the climate crisis from different angles, we are identifying barriers to change, and we are boldly building carbon-neutral secondary schools with an environmental and social focus.
In today’s secondary schools, are we providing the knowledge and skills that will be needed in the coming decades? If the climate doesn't recognise borders, then neither do we! Approaches that cut across subject lines represent the secondary schools of tomorrow, and this is what we are trying to achieve in this project. The climate crisis is often modelled on a scientific basis, but the reality is that it poses a challenge to our social fabric, our wellbeing, our culture and our values, in addition to being a challenge for the environment. Our network will share the existing climate knowledge and good practices of different schools, with new smart approaches being created.
Our schools are still far from becoming carbon-neutral, but we are working hard to achieve this. In the project, secondary school pupils and teachers in Northern Ostrobothnia are joining forces with university and vocational college students, and are starting to develop the "secondary school 2.0". A student climate panel and teacher network develop and put into practice ways to create a sustainable secondary school. A genuine redevelopment for the 21st century! We are planning a carbon-neutral school guide for all Finnish secondary schools and will be taking our message beyond secondary schools as well.
We have taken the first important steps in the project and identified problem areas where change towards carbon neutrality has often stalled. By shaking up structures, we are working towards the ecological redevelopment of secondary schools, as eco-social education and resource-smart schools will be the future in the 21st century.
